Dear Komal, with instant noodles becoming a regular part of many teenagers and young adults diets, often replacing balanced meals, I'm concerned about their long-term health effects. These products are typically high in sodium, fats, and additives, with little nutritional value. From a dietary perspective, how harmful is frequent consumption of such processed foods? Also, could you suggest healthier alternatives that offer a similar taste experience but are more nutritionally balanced?

Ans: Frequent consumption of instant noodles can contribute to poor diet quality and increase risks of metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and nutrient deficiencies. They’re typically low in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies if consumed frequently. Many varieties contain hydrogenated oils and preservatives, which may negatively impact cholesterol levels and overall health. Relying on instant noodles often means skipping more balanced meals, leading to poor overall diet quality. Healthier options include whole-grain or brown rice noodles or sweet potato noodles. Soba noodles or shirataki noodles are also good alternatives as they are very low in calories and carbs and rich in protein and fiber.
